The Church is alive in
Haiti! Pastors Gordon and Debbie Brubaker left for Haiti on Thursday March 18, and returned on March 30. In eleven days in Haiti they sang and preached in eleven services in nine different churches. Haiti Mission Service is active in assisting people to rebuild their lives. Although the effects of the earthquake are still very evident (it has only been two months), much clean up has been accomplished, but the damage was so severe in a 60 mile area from the epicenter that it will take years for a full recovery. On Friday, Pastors Gordon and Debbie shared in the P-A-P church at Bizotone. Many of the area homes were lost. Debris and tents spilled out into the already narrow streets crowding them so that our vehicle could barely pass them to reach the church. Miraculously the church, which sits on the top edge of a hill overlooking P-A-P was structurally undamaged. Saturday and Sunday we were in the country at LaGoisse, past Savenette. Dave Sutton's team from Old Furnace Church of the Brethren had just completed a new roof on the church which the Church was still celebrating. |
Monday we were back in P-A-P at the Church in CaNaan. This area was also
hard hit by the earthquake. The Church, a building of tin, was not damaged
and the people were in good spirits.
Tuesday we visited the temporarily relocated Delmas Church at the "Camp of God!" Pastor Lyonel was able to find property south of St. Mark and moved between 1,500 and 2,000 of his church members from P-A-P. The camp may have to relocate or move back into P-A-P in another month. Area families and a local church have assisted them. It costs between $700-900 dollars a day to feed the people. It was interesting to hear the Haitian Pastors address their people. The common themes were that we are created to worship God and that we praise Him because we are alive! Although they acknowledged the obvious loss and setbacks, this was NOT the focus of their attention! They trust in the God who can restore and increase! This is a living vibrant faith. The Lord spoke prophetically to Pastor Lyonel and the Delmas Church. That
they would rebuild the Church and they would accomplish more in less time
than they had in the past! PTL! |

Wednesday we left for Pernal. We only had one service and it rained this
night, but the Lord moved and spoke prophetically to the Pastors and the
congregation at Pernal.
Thursday we were back in P-A-P at a new congregation that has recently joined with Pastor Preval, Chanjma. One wall had collapsed on the small church, and the Pastor had his home next door destroyed. He is living in a small temporary tin structure at the rear of the church. We literally drove past a tent city to reach the church which is located on a hill, where else can you build in P-A-P, reached by narrow one lane, washed out roads. There is no parking place or even a place to turn around at the hill top, but our pickup truck made it along with two other cars full of people AND a 20 foot bus loaded with people from Bizotone! Somehow the bus maneuvered and turned around! The Lord again had a word for the Pastor. Out of Scripture, Romans 10:6-11, the Lord spoke that this Pastor will not be put to shame.

Pastors Gordon and Debbie thought they had seen a lot of earthquake damage
(see additional pictures following this article) but when they arrived at
Pastor Leslie's Church it was overwhelming.
Bizotone had been the closest to downtown P-A-P, with CaNaan being the furthest out. Chanjma was closer, but Pastor Leslie's Church was closer still and the damage was almost total! The church building was still standing, but the back half was gone exposing all three floors. Again on a hill, ALL the homes were gone! The damage must have been extremely bad that the area was one of the few that had been cleaned up. Since the road we traveled on is not a significant route, it meant that so many people had been caught in the rubble or died that they had to clean it up to recover the bodies, Where last year we walked in narrow paths between two and three storied
homes, we walked between rubble and temporary tin huts. We walked past people
cooking, sleeping, living in areas not as large as most living rooms in the
United States. As with the tents, these huts were so close that you could not
walk between them. |

It was quite an experience for Pastors Gordon and Debbie to be able to speak
of the power of God to heal and restore in the very midst of such devastation.
The spirit of the Churches are evident in their praise and worship to God who
saved them from the destruction that surrounds them!
It is a reminder that destruction is coming upon the world and only God can save us. The Haitian government and the United Nations leadership in Haiti were not prepared or able to stop the earthquake or to properly respond to the crisis! On whom can we call upon in the day of adversity? Scripture tells us that God is a "present help in time of trouble!" Thank God that what man cannot do, He is able and willing to come to our aid! Saturday we traveled to Hinch for Saturday and Sunday services. The truck from Pernal had already arrived with Pastor Edna and many from the Church. Since Wednesday service at Pernal they had contacted Pastor Preval three times asking him to make arrangements for them to be at the services in Hinch. The Thomassique Church also joined us for the two services which made for a full house! |
Sunday afternoon we returned to P-A-P. Pastor Gordon was looking forward to
the Monday Pastors Conference. Around 150 Pastors attended, It was their first
meeting since the earthquake. What a reunion. Although they had spoken with
each other, their joy was evident at seeing everyone.
Pastors Gordon and Debbie were glad to see special friends here: Pastor Simeon, Pastor Lily, Pastor Lyonel, Pastor Eddy and others were present. Pastor Gordon was able to share about the different questions and ideas regarding the earthquake. For example, Michael Moore said the quake was punishment on Haiti for the U.S. not signing the Copenhagen Climate Treaty, Chavez of Venezuela claims the U.S. set off a test bomb that created the quake! Others conclude that it was a judgment of God. Pastor Gordon asked if it was a judgment of God then it should be apparent why? Otherwise we can't learn what to correct.

What we can learn is the ineffectiveness of a government that is only
concerned with its own survival. That leaders that operate by greed and graft
need to be replaced by Godly men and women who fear the Lord Jesus
Christ. A just government is to protect the righteous. God told
Cain, "If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do
well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule
over it" (Genesis 4:7).
Pastor Gordon shared that these are not "usual" or normal times in Haiti and that the Church needs to understand our time in prophecy. Pastor Gordon raised the Daniel question, where Israel has been taken captive and Daniel asks, "what will happen to Your people in the latter days..." (Daniel 10:14). This is THE most asked question during hard times. Does God remember His people or are we to disappear, to be absorbed by our culture to be forgotten? The angel reassured Daniel that no matter what our conditions, we will overcome! God remembers His people and His covenant! To understand the times we live in we must understand Romans 5:14, where it tells us "death reigned from Adam to Moses..." We know that the Law came through Moses. This Law changed the direction of history. When death reigned men rose to prominence through the use of intimidation and raw power. Underlying this reign of terror is the belief that right comes from the barrel of a gun. |
The Law of Moses changed this. This Law of God put everyone under the same
Law, your social order no longer mattered, be peasant or king. The same Law
applied to everyone, for everyone was responsible to the Supreme God, the
creator of heaven and earth. God appointed prophets to speak to the king
when they strayed, and the priest who could withhold the grace of God.
We see both of these "laws" in effect today! But in Jesus we see a different "law," it is the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:2)! This is the clash of kingdoms we see in the world today! In every nation! It is actually MORE demanding to live in the law of the spirit of life in
Christ Jesus, to live by grace, than the other laws. The law of death never
creates wealth, but has to steal it from someone else. The Law of Moses,
reveals our need of a Savior, for it demonstrates how weak mere men are
without God! The law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus, grace, operates
through giving. "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your
a bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."
Luke 6:38. |
